Superstition [Listen-up]

Saturday, February 28, 2009

the awesomest (yes, that is a word) part of this song is the fact that there is no one else playing an instrument off camera. the whole sound that you are hearing is all being played at once by this dude. it's called fingerstyle, and i want to learn it.

In 2006, Obama visited Kibera, Kenya, one of the worst slums in all of Africa. As he came to the village, children from the outskirts of town, seeing him approaching, turned and ran to the village center, chanting, “Obama biro yawne yo! Obama biro yawne yo!”

“Obama’s coming. Clear the way.”

Beautiful, bittersweet memories flood my mind when I listen to this song...

...the lyrics speak of grasping special times in our lives and not letting their opportunities slip away...when we are young it is so hard to really understand that...someday today will be a long, long time ago.

I Feel Like I'm Goin' Nowhere Fast...

Monday, January 12, 2009

and so, i must have listened to this song 100 times today...

Can you feel the room spinning?
Can you feel what's happening?
Walls are caving, colors change.
The red you're wearing turns to grey.

Oceans rise and oceans subside.
The seasons give up and so have I.

Holding you is holding you back from what you could be, what you could have.
Run away, run away before it's too late.
Run away before it's too late.
Run away, run away before it's too late.
Run away before it's too late.
You never what you're gonna find out there.
No, you never know until you look.

Memories as sweet as these,
You cannot take them, they belong to me.

Don't you worry, worry about me.
Don't make this harder than it has to be.

Run away, run away before it's too late to run away.
Run away before it's too late.
Run away, run away before it's too late.
Run away before it's too late.
You never know what you're gonna find out there,
No you never know until you look.
Run away before it's too late.
Run away...

Run away before it's too late to run away.
Run away before it's too late.
Run away before it's too late to run away.
I want you to stay.
You never know what you're gonna find out there.
No you never know until you look.

If It Kills Me...

Wednesday, January 07, 2009

hello
tell me you know
yea you figured me out
something
gave it away
it would be such a beautiful moment
to see the look on your face
to know that
i know that you know now

and baby that's a case of my wishful thinking
you know nothing
well you and i, why
we go carrying on for hours on and
we get along much better than you and your boyfriend

well all i really wanna do is love you
a kind much closer than friends use
but i still can't say it after all we've been through
and all i really want from you is to feel me
as the feeling inside keeps building
and i will find a way to you if it kills me
if it kills me

how long
can i go on like this
wishing to kiss you
before i rightly explode
well this double life i lead
isn't healthy for me
in fact it makes me nervous
if i get caught i could be risking it all
cause maybe there's a lot that i miss
in case i'm wrong

all i really wanna do is love you
a kind much closer than friends use
i still can't say it after all we've been through
and all i really want from you is to feel me
as the feeling inside keeps building
and i will find a way to you if it kills me
if it kills me
if it kills me

if i should be so bold
i'd ask you to hold my heart in your hand
i'd tell you from the start how i longed to be your man
but i never said a word i guess i'm going to miss my chance again

well all i really wanna do is love you
a kind much closer than friends use
i still can't say it after all we've been through
and all i really want from you is to feel me
as the feeling inside keeps building
and i will find a way to you if it kills me
if it kills me
oh i think it might kill me

and all i really want from you is to feel you
yea the feeling inside keeps building
i'll find a way to you if it kills me
if it kills me
if it kills me
it might kill me

Repost: Soy Sauce Packets & Mp3s [2008 in Tunes]

Thursday, January 01, 2009

happy new year!!! here's a repost from a couple of days ago... my new years gift to you...

i'm glad that 2008 is almost over, because it's been a really, really long year. i'll spare further details, and just say that i'm glad that i had music to escape to. this album consists of 27 songs that helped me get through the year; some new, some old, some classics, some soon-to-be. in any case, these are the jams that got me through some strange times. many of them you may have heard throughout the year, be it with [your morning coffee] on weekends, or in a listen-up post whenever a song was stuck in my head. this album is my gift to you, i hope you enjoy it.

a few notes on the album- 1) i usually stress myself out when making a mixtape, by trying to put the songs in the perfect order. i didn't this time. i did a bit of shuffling, but for the most part, i let the album make itself. consider it to be organic. 2) i didn't pay much mind to the number of songs that would fit onto a cd, because i put the songs as a playlist on my ipod. if you plan on ripping this to a cd, you're gonna need two. 3) i've already passed some of these songs on to some of you regular-reader types, so i setup the file to download one song at a time, in case you already have some. sorry it'll take you a little longer than it should. and 4) when you click the link below the tracklist, the page has the songs in the same order, except for song #22, because the band's mp3s have chastity belts tighter than a jonas brother and i couldn't change the track name.

02- valerie - mark ronson & amy winehouse
03- m79 - vampire weekend
04- foundations - kate nash

Live High, Live Mighty, Live Righteously...

Friday, December 19, 2008

...and try to picture the man
to always have an open hand
and see him as a giving tree
see him as matter
matter of fact he's not a beast
oh no not the devil either
always a good deed do-er
and it's laughter that we're making after all
the call of the wild is still an ordination why
in the order of the primates
all our politics are too late
oh my the congregation in my mind
is this assembly singing of gratitude
practicing their loving for you

live high
live mighty
live righteously
taking it easy...

Damn, Do I Miss It.

Monday, December 01, 2008

every restaurant you work in leaves a mark on you. sometimes it's just a scrape, sometimes it's a scar, and sometimes it leaves you tattooed - changed forever. your scrapes are probably few. the impact of these kitchens may have hit you hard initially, but in time those marks will fade, along with your memories of these places. what were the dishes we were cooking there? who was that guy i worked pantry with? was there even a chef there? often these places were your stepping stones. these are the places that didn't necessarily inspire you or maybe they did, until you realized that maybe thai/mexican fusion wasn't your thing and you split. but no worries, these places don't remember you either. when you go by for a visit (if they're still in business) you recognize no one. the menu is full of the same stuff you were cooking years ago. the only change is that the floors are a little more worn, and the kitchen is covered in a new layer of grease. the lessons you took away with you seem remedial now; learning what the sanitizer dispenser looks like, what a 6th pan is, and how to brunoise pancetta perfectly, to name a few. you might even leave this place off of your resume.

a restaurant that scars you usually does so physically and mentally. i'm not talking emotional scars, although there might be a few of those. i'm talking about a change in the way you approach your work... that eventually starts to spill over into your personal life. your inner clock starts to adjust to your nocturnal lifestyle. when you walk the crowded aisles of a grocery store you say "behind you." your technique starts to come around, and you start to understand the language of the kitchen. spanish starts to pop up when you're talking to your friends. food looks different now. eating out, you can identify ingredients, techniques, and see a chef's style coming out. these scars are your foundation, and these years are the ones you refer to as the good old days. you pay your dues here, and come away with confidence, and hunger for the next challenge.

the kitchens that tattoo you are the most rare. these places hold a place in your heart reserved for family, your girlfriend, and anything else deeply important to you. after working here you talk differently. you listen differently. your very dna morphs into something new. and it goes both ways. you leave your mark, and you can see it rubbing off on others daily. everyone uses the same phrases, and holds themselves to the same standards. conversations ramble on and on about cooking. time spent out of the kitchen is still spent together, as a team, eating out or going to markets. on your days off you miss the kitchen. you look back on yourself before you came here, and that person is almost unrecognizable.

so the question is, how are you leaving your mark? is your impact something positive? are you contributing something? are you a part of it? or just skirting along the edges? do the other cooks mimic your style? do they listen when you speak? are you able to see the big picture - balancing the personal side and the business side? is everyone working towards the same goals? is everyone even comfortable talking about their goals? will your time spent here be something that influences and changes the other cooks careers?

i've made a difference.

and damn, do i miss it.

To Say That 2008 Has Been a Long Year, Would Be a Gross Understatement.

right about this time last year, i was in the midst of what i thought was something of a quarterlife crisis. i was sure that i had hit rock bottom and that there was nowhere to go but up. now as i sit here, i wonder what my life would be like if what i know now, i knew then.

love for a child
i've learned a lot about myself in the past twelve months- i've lost jobs, cars, friends, family and a lifetime of memories; all in the span of one year. i've learned exactly what it is that i can live without. i've learned the true value of friendship. and most importantly, through an odd array of lists and notes in a journal, i've learned about me. i can now define myself more conclusively, and i'm a better person for it.

details in the fabric
i've taken a beating. i've been faced with challenges that no one else understands. i've made sacrifices that others take for granted. i've been beaten down endlessly, yet i've been able to stumble to my feet. and i stumble still, grasping at consistency and happiness in the distance.

with all that being said, i'm not sure how to feel this holiday season. the holidays, for me at least, were always about consistency. the repetitious series of events that went on every year. the simple feeling of being home. i haven't felt at home anywhere in six years. the holiday feast... the cheerful banter... when i think about that last christmas in my hometown with my small family and a handful of extended family, gathered around the holiday table, it feels like a dream. i don't ever know that i'll feel that again, but the holiday spirit was truly alive that night...

halfway home
i write this, not in search of pity or praise, but to let go and move on...

i still have much to be thankful for this year.
