Searching for the Meaning of Life... [via Text Message]

Monday, October 11, 2010

Yup, this just happened.

ME: NEVER go camping with a chick who's menstruating. Bears can smell it. You'll get mauled.

NJ: Danke. How you doin?

ME: Grand. WTF have you been up to? Working like a Guatamalan dishwasher?

NJ: More like a Peruvian one, but all the same. I've been good. Searching for the meaning of life and going to lots of sporting events.

ME: Perhaps you'll find the meaning of life in the parking lot at the Meadowlands. Big things happen there.

NJ: Yea, like flea markets.

ME: And killer ferris wheels.

NJ: That's it! I will sell miniature killer ferris wheels at a local flea market next weekend!

ME: I'm glad I could help.

Overheard at Barnes & Noble...

Friday, July 02, 2010

After a childish spat with my other half the other night, I found myself sunken in a germ ridden chair at my local Barnes & Noble. Although I was attempting to knock out a few chapters of 'Medium Raw,' I found it difficult due to my close proximity to the cafe's seating area. Hipster after hipster sat next to me to slurp down their $8 latte-chino-machiatos. And all I could do was eavesdrop. It was as if a complete stranger wasn't sitting two feet away from them, tweeting their every word...

The following is the fruit of my eavesdropping endeavors. All of which I was tweeting, as it happened, with the hashtag #OverheardAtBarnesAndNoble:

"His penis was like a stale banana." -60ish year old woman to her much younger friend

"I'm tired of predominantly black men walking around with their asses hanging out. I don't want to see your ass unless I'm crawling into bed with it." -Same 60ish year old lady to her now obviously bored friend

"I don't know what's worse, that she has her 'poosy' pierced or that she's wearing capri pants." -Bored friend talking about another "friend" in the cafe line

"He makes his life harder because he can't keep it in his pants." -60ish year old lady talking about her son

At this point, the oldies left and a trio of blonde college tarts sat down to flip through their CosmoGirl Mags and sip their skinny lattes...

"Whatever, I'm sure John Mayer has gotten way more girls than The Situation has." -Debate Team Captain

"There's a girl in my Chinese class named 'Young,' but it's spelled D-U-N-G. She's Asian." -Captain Obvious

"Why does gas cost $2.47 9/10 per gallon? Are we supposed to carry around pieces of pennies?" -Dipshit in B&N

"What's Lupus?" "Lupus is an auto-immune disease. You would know that if you watched House." -MD Candidate, 2012

"I'm judging Cameron Diaz for being in that movie with Tom Cruise. He's a tool."

"I like 'Sarah, Plain & Tall." "You would."

"It's not called Chat Roulette, it's called Chat Roolay."

"I prefer Jumpers to Rompers."

Next came the pair of Yuppie Moms with their jogging strollers and Volvo keys...

"I've never had to use lube in my life. I'm just naturally wet. It's more comfortable. You should be jealous."

"I have this eerie feeling that there's someone watching me and licking their lips."

And with that, I left.

2010 is going to be my year.

Thursday, March 04, 2010

I decided that soon after the miserable holidays that I "celebrated" last year. After all, I've been in the shit long enough, haven't I? I'm tired of being broke. I'm tired of being unhappy. So in 2010, I decided that on top of continuing my endless quest for a job that pays actual money, I was going to be happy. Even if that means broke and happy, it's happiness that's important.

In order to accomplish this feat, I made a few attainable resolutions to myself, the first of which is to blog more often. I mean seriously, look around, this place is about as up-to-date as Sarah Palin's closet in a non-election year. So, like Tiger Woods, I've gotta get on top of that. Let's call this "one small step for man, and one giant leap for Butter." (And don't judge me for referring to myself in third person by my twitter handle.)

I also resolved to myself that I need to start getting out more. Between weekend trips to DC and my new found sport(?!?) Of GeoCaching, I've been fulfilling this resolution just fine. I'm hoping to visit all of the DC museums before the year's end, but I'd be happy with 50%. As for the GeoCaching, which for those of you that don't know, is essentially using billion dollar government satellites to find Tupperware hidden in the woods, it has kept me busy and exploring parts of Virginia that I otherwise would have ignored. (And Toasty likes it too.)

I also realized that there are a few important people in my life that I need to reconnect with. My small family is one of those "people." It's rough sometimes and I don't know that I'll ever be able to check this one off my list, because just like children, when it comes to family, you can't live with 'em and you can't shoot 'em.

My old pals from my Rhode Island days, Kelly & Monica, have been at the top of my "need to reconnect with asap" list for about 3 years now. Due to the circumstances of being a hippie, I never thought it would happen, but Kelly finally joined Facebook and we got back in touch about two weeks ago. You know how you can really tell who your good friends are? Vanish from each other's lives for 5 years and then get back together with them; if it feels like no time has gone by, you're golden. And I've got to say, as much as it blew losing touch, staying up watching the Olympics until 4am and drinking PBRs with good friends and a 20 pound cat never felt so right. Mission Accomplished. Next on that list: Theresa, Toni & Karbo.

Unfortunately this process has not been all good. In the process of knocking out some lines of my Two-Thousand-Ten-Do-List, I've been less than reliable when it comes to answering my cell and returning calls.

Believe it or not, that was one of my big ideas too. It's a pretty simple one: Answer the fcuking phone when people call you. I think to myself, 'If people are taking time out of their schedule to call you, you who has no job or pressing appointments, pause the motherfcuking DVR and answer the phone.' I just realized how bad I am with this, as I got angry typing that last sentence. I'll work on that, I promise.

Well it's 3am and my thumbs feel like they're about to fall off my sweaty palms after typing this entire blog post on my BlackBerry, so I'll bid you adieu, for now.

Until next time, America...

Laundry FAIL

Monday, March 09, 2009

although i'm sure this tag is in a t-shirt from an über-hip thread shop like busted tees or threadless, i'm sure it wasn't meant to be noticed. and if by some chance you have no life and happen to read your t-shirt's care tag, it's placed there in hopes of putting a smile on your face, if only for one second, before you go off on some feminist rant.

this was posted on failblog this morning and has a very special meaning to me. growing up i lived in a house with two older sisters, a mom and a grandma, so it was a rare occurrence that i ever had to do my own laundry. that was, until one day after watching an episode of sally jessy raphael about chauvinist asswipes, i was STUPID enough to say out loud, presumably after being asked to put the load of wash that was in the washer into the dryer, that "LAUNDRY WAS WOMEN'S WORK." needless to say, i've been doing my own laundry since about the third grade...[photo via failblog]

I Hate Facebook, And 25 Other Things That You Probably Don't Give A Sh*t About:

Monday, February 02, 2009

1- i've recently discovered that hearing people eat cereal makes me want to punch them in the face. the slurp/crunch combo kills me.

2- i have zero tolerance/compassion for sick people. and by sick, i mean cold, flu, headache, etc.; i'm not talking gravely ill. when i'm sick, i may be in a bitchy mood, but you won't hear me complaining about it.

3- i haven't had a cellphone in almost 2 years. as much as i love not having one, i've realized that it's the only way to keep in touch with some people. i'm currently in the final stages of breaking down to purchase a new one.

4- i'm totally one of those stubborn/loyal people that finds a product or service that works, and i never stray. some examples as of late: cough drops- fisherman's friend (they may taste like ass chalk, but they work like a charm), cold remedy- theraflu (because it's jersey born and raised, just like me), chapstick- blistex clear advance (well, i used to be loyal, until those asshats discontinued it. now i'm a carmex man).

5- totally opposite of #4, some things i couldn't care less about. exhibit a: toilet paper. i don't care if it's silk or 80 grit, if it keeps my hand clean and wipes the crack, it's fine by me.

6- i was less than legitimately employed for the first 11 months of 2008.

7- i thoroughly enjoy personal time, and i get bitchy when i don't have any.

8- some of my best blogging in the past 2 months has happened on the i95 corridor.

9- i enjoy drinking the juice out of jars of banana pepper rings.

10- lately i've had heartburn like a 90 year old and have been chewing zantac like pez. this can most likely be attributed to actions such as #9.

11- i really want to do undercover police work. i think i'd be great at it. nobody in their right mind would ever suspect me. ever.

12- i would kill a praying mantis for a spicy tuna handroll and a bowl of kimchee right about now.

13- even though i think i would be a great undercover agent, i would also really like to be the person that chooses the music to go in movies and tv shows. and i would be the fcuking cool musical director (if that's what they're called) because i wouldn't just use all the been-around-way-too-long-bands that get used in every damn movie. hey, mtv, call me.

14- that i can count, there are 6 people in my life that i refer to as "my future ex-wife." my girlfriend is not one of them.

15- ...but i don't ever want to get married, so hopefully that'll never happen. though i do want kids, and a 'wife,' just not marriage so much. goldie hawn and kurt russell did it and are living happily ever after, so why can't i?

16- i know that money doesn't fix everything, but $250,000 sure would be nice right about now. when i drive back and forth between virginia and new jersey, every time i see a lottery sign, i daydream about all the things that i would do if i won that money.

17- my current job requires me to talk on the phone for 8 hours a day. almost once a day, someone tells me that i have a sexy phone voice. today i have a sore throat and a stuffy nose, and 4, count them, 4 people said it today. and the last one was a dude that said i "gave him the chills."

18- i'm only going to say this once: i love watching the real world brooklyn. don't judge me.

19- i have the uncanny ability to not only draw strange connections between otherwise unrelated objects/places/smells/tastes/etc., but also to remember them. forever. i.e. whenever i drink dr. pepper, i immediately visualize the break room at leewards, where my mom used to work when i was 10. whenever i smell wet hay, it reminds me of the jaycees carnival at borough field in my hometown. i could go on forever...

20- facebook requires way to much effort on my part. i wish the world would realize that although myspace is juvenile, at least it tells you when somebody talks shit about you. on facebook you have to continuously stalk people to see who's talking smack. i don't have that kind of time.

21- for as stressed out as i feel all the time, i've realized that compared to most people i know, i'm a pretty laid back and easy going guy.

22- i hate that when i'm freezing my balls off i think to myself, "i'd rather be sweating my ass off." and when i'm sweating my ass off i think to myself, "i'd rather be freezing my balls off." because really, i'd rather be doing neither.

23- new words that i hate: truncate, lavage, piquant, meme, quixotic.

24- flashback to #16- people that cannot hold a conversation about anything, without mentioning the cost of something make me want to drink cod liver oil. money does not equal true happiness.

25- sometimes, i wish that i did, indeed, sweat actual butter. then i could rub toast in my armpits.

**BONUS** i bet after this, no one ever posts a 'note' on facebook ever again. and for the asswipe facebook inventor that started this meme, congratulations! now everyone knows about another useless function that facebook has to offer. thank you for providing mind numbing entertainment for half the country. next time just send an email chain letter, it's easier to forward. thanks.

A Hillbilly, A DeLorean & A Diet Coke Walk Into A Laundromat...

Friday, January 23, 2009

am i the only one that feels like the minute i step through the door of a laundromat, it's like stepping through a wormhole that transports me back to 1989? i had the unfortunate opportunity (because like walmart, i DESPISE laundromats), to attend a veritable party at a backwoods launderette in milford, pennsylvania yesterday.

this particular one, besides being stuck in '89, also has an owner that is obviously obsessed with duck & masking tape, as you'll soon see in the photos i took at last night's soiree. the one thing it did have going for it was the efficiency (sarcasm implied) of the seemingly original machines ever commercially produced by westinghouse.

what would a laundromat be without a hand painted sign? it would be second class, that's what it would be.

cancel that above statement, and let me rephrase: what would a laundromat be without a colored pencil sketch of a man taking the sign literally and stripping his clothes off because his machine stopped? third world, that's what it would be. i'm just glad that none of the old, wrinkly hillbillies took to the sign the way 'the great schnazzole' in the drawing did. that would have been a redneck mess.

"sorry... no restroom," but feel free to use any of the 14 washing machines that are out of order. the masking tape has spoken.

restroom open. please don't mind the masking tape.

tape on door is pennsylvanian for "ain't working." likewise, no tape on door translates to "$5 and 2 hours to dry 2 socks on 'high.'"

emergency exit, or not. about two feet outside the door that this sign was or wasn't marking, there was a six foot tall fence. no gate. just fence. so if there's a fire, you may want to find another way out. and if you need duck tape, there's still half a roll covering the twelve inch sign. and about that "surveillance camera," yea, the wires were just chillin, not connected to anything. so feel free to hijack quarters at your convenience.

now would be a good time to hijack the quarters out of one of the 'highly efficient' dryers. either that, or go 'next door' to the 'convenience' store to get change. and by 'next door,' i mean 3 miles down the road.

in case you don't believe that the surveillance camera is real, try stealing this state-of-the-art speaker and pawning it down the street. it's apparently happened before, making it necessary to write "milford laundry" on the side. i must say that i'm surprised that there was no tape involved in the application of this speaker to the wall. (in their defense, i'm sure this speaker was state-of-the-art in 1958 when speakers were invented.)

for your convenience, this lovely 'mat provides liquid refreshments. WARNING, machine only accepts wooden nickels.

twenty wooden nickels and the push of a button, gets you a can of diet coke, that as far as i can tell coca-cola stopped labeling with that logo in 1984!?!

...and so goes the story of the laundromat/time machine. reason #2431 why living in the boonies sucks.

New Administration, New Rules. I'm Going To Submit These To Obama To Sign An Executive Order, STAT.

Thursday, January 22, 2009

dear president obama,

i believe congratulations are in order. you've inspired so many to hope, and as i am keenly aware, you are anxious to get right to work in the oval office. and on that note, i've compiled this list of executive orders for your perusal and signature at your earliest convenience.
NEW RULE #1: stop pop-up ads for classmates.com. there's a reason you don't talk to people for 10 years. because you don't particularly like them. besides, i already know what the captain of the football team is doing these days: mowing my lawn.

NEW RULE #2: don't eat anything that's served to you out of a window unless you're a seagull. people are acting all shocked that a human finger was found in a bowl of wendy's chili. hey, it costs less than a dollar. what did you expect it to contain? kobe beef? you're lucky it was only a thumb.

NEW RULE #3: ladies, leave your eyebrows alone. here's how much us men care about your eyebrows: do you have two of them? okay, we're done.

NEW RULE #4: there's no such thing as flavored water. there's an entire aisle devoted to that crap at the grocery store. water, but without that watery taste. sorry, but flavored water is called a soft drink. and stop acting surprised that it's not packed with your daily dose of vitamins and minerals. you want flavored water? pour some grand marnier over ice and let it melt. now that's flavored water.

NEW RULE #5: the more complicated your starbucks order, the bigger the asshole you are. this has always been the case, but these days if i'm in need of caffeine bad enough to spring $5 for a cup of coffee, i'm not going to have much patience for your long-ass yuppie order. so if you walk into starbucks and order a "decaf grande half-soy, half-low fat, iced vanilla, double-shot, gingerbread cappuccino, extra dry, light ice, with one sweet n' low," you're a huge asshole. remember that.

NEW RULE #6: just because your tattoo has chinese characters in it doesn't make you "spiritual." it's right above the crack of your ass. and for all you know it translates to "beef with broccoli." the last time you did anything spiritual, you were praying to god you weren't pregnant. you're not spiritual, you're probably just high. and on top of all that, the phone is ringing, it's 1999, they want their tattoo back.

NEW RULE #7: competitive eating is not a sport. it's one of the seven deadly sins. and it's funny how asians make fun of americans for being fattys and then they show up at the nathan's lips-and-ass eating contest and take the crown every year. espn even televises it now. because those "athletes" at the poker table are so 2008. what's next, competitive farting? oh wait, they're already doing that. it's called "the howard stern show."

NEW RULE #8: if you're going to insist on making movies based on crappy, old television shows, then you have to give everyone in the theater a remote so we can see what's playing on the other screens. let's remember the reason something was a television show in the first place, it's because the idea wasn't good enough to be a movie. and on top of that, there's also a reason that it used to be a television show.

NEW RULE #9: enough already with the gift registries. it used to be just for weddings. now it's for babies and new homes and graduations from rehab. picking out the stuff you want and having other people buy it for you isn't gift giving, it's the white people version of looting.

NEW RULE #10: this one is long overdue: no more bathroom attendants. after i zip up, some guy is offering me a towel and a mint like i just had sex with george michael. and it's even worse when you can't even tell if he's supposed to be there, or just some freak with a fetish. i don't want to be on your webcam, dude. i just want to wash my hands.

NEW RULE #11: when i ask how old your toddler is, i don't need to know in months. "27 months." "he's two," will do just fine. he's not a cheese. and besides, i didn't really care in the first place.

NEW RULE #12: all americans should have the reserved right to stab anyone in the eye with an icicle that says, "cold enough for ya?" no asswipe, i actually prefer my testicles hiding behind my nipples while my snot freezes on my upper lip. and on that note, wanna make out?

thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.

sincerely,

sir i. sweat butter III
