Just one more reason to love the great Morgan Freeman: the actor donated $17,000 to his local high school in Charleston, Mississippi, so that the high school students could finally hold their first integrated prom. (seriously? an integrated prom in 2009? that's so 1955. looks like the south sure is "rising again." i guess they still can't read down in those parts either, or maybe 'apartheid' is just too big of a word. as far as progress goes, maybe the folks in mississippi have some kind of conversion, like cats & dogs do for aging. one human year = fifty mississippian years.)
Freeman's offer, which was first made in 1997, was finally taken up by the school eleven years later, thanks in part to Freeman's participation in a documentary film by Paul Saltzman, who documented Freeman's pitch to the school board, community reactions, and student interviews which showed reactions to the idea of an integrated prom and discussions of the racism that is still present in their town. Not everyone was thrilled with the idea of an integrated dance; several students retaliated by holding a "Whites-Only" prom, which the filmmakers were not invited to cover. (something tells me that the only reason these troglodytes are 'integrating' is because there school can't afford to exist. i doubt $17,000 is being spent on a prom. principal bonus, maybe?)
The documentary, "Prom Night In Mississippi," is premiering this week at Sundance. Freeman, who was outraged ("It's the stupidest thing I've ever heard") that children in his town were still dealing with segregated dances, hopes that the prom, and the film, will break down the separate dance system and the mentality that fuels it. "The kids are not going to want to go backwards," Freeman says, "They've got their toe in the water, and the water's warm." (movie clip, here.)

i read gawker and defamer and slog, and always get a kick out of the industry news surrounding new movies. it makes me laugh that these big movie studios only pour ridiculous amounts of money into the movies that they want to do well. shouldn't they want any movie with their name on it to be a success? i would think so. those cock knockers the weinstein brothers are a perfect example. and what do they have to show for themselves these days? nada.
on the other hand, i find that the more the hype a movie gets, the more likely i am to hate it. the only two exceptions that i can recall from 2008 were the dark knight (which was a very last minute choice, and although i'm not a fan of the comic book franchises, i thoroughly enjoyed this one) and that new benjamin buttons movie. i'd much rather go see a movie that the critics say sucks, because i usually end up enjoying them. i.e. stop loss.
so if hype means i'll hate it, and bad reviews means i'll love it, then it would most definitely be true that if i've never heard of it in my life, because the gawker shlubbs were to busy to write anything about it, then i'll most likely, absolutely love it. which is true for this movie, 10 items or less, that i watched on starz ondemand the other night. morgan freeman. jonah hill. the little indian man that played the janitor in the terminal. independent. low budget. most likely, very low budget. but a cinematic gem that i, a seldom promoter of films, encourage you to watch. or even buy.

screw 'a christmas story,' if i had to name three christmas movies that remind me of christmas, in more than just theme, i'd have to go with 'white christmas' with bing crosby & danny kaye, 'national lampoon's christmas vacation,' and this movie, that still surprises me to this day that so many children of the 80's have no idea what it is, 'emmet otter's jug-band christmas.' a clip, for your enjoyment...

you should probably keep a couple cases of this in your storm cellar. especially if you live in kansas. i bet dorothy wouldn't have bothered leaving that dusty old cellar and running off to get high on poppies in oz had she had a few cases of this stuff. then again, i bet she was wishing she had some after she got high on those poppies. munchies are a bitch. (but really, do you get the munchies from opium, or crack, or whatever drug that make from poppies?)
yoders canned bacon: fully cooked, ready to eat, 12 cans per case, 40 to 50 slices per can. buy some for under your christmas tree today, from mredepot.

if i had to narrow it down, i'd say that about 15 minutes of the hour long 'christmas special' was actually entertaining. sam was sitting on the couch (reading, of all things, that vegan-vampire book) making fun of me for watching it. after the mildly funny opening song, it was painful to watch for a while. elvis costello doesn't do much for me, feist should stick to singing counting songs, and although i love jon stewart, when he and colbert get together, it's like hanging out with friends who constantly refer to inside jokes that no one else gets.
even with all of its non-joyous moments, it was worth watching for two reasons:
willie "the 4th wiseman" nelson singing about bringing what else, but weed, to the manger-

it's not often that i am as moved by a movie as i am by a tune, but every once in a while one comes along that is really worthy of mention. bobby. you can watch it on showtime on demand, or netflix it. hell, it's even worth the gas to go get it at blockbuster. beyond entertainment and the political season, this movie is a piece of cinematic genius that serves as a historic snapshot of american history. and even further beyond that, it's what cinema is meant to be.

who is it, exactly, that decides when it's a good time to remake a movie? i'm guessing that every production company employs an overpaid executive to conduct research and in turn prepare a timeline on the relative necessity of destroying cinematic classics. i.e. friday the 13th, texas chainsaw massacre, tron et al. and now, footloose!?!? and the best part? ren mccormack will be played by... wait for it... zac motherfucking efron. apparently his pathetic singing and dancing in 'lame school music 17: left back, again' really blew away producers. i hope that kevin bacon and kenny loggins feel as disgraced as i do.
